The esteemed three-time Laurence Olivier award winner, Philip Quast, enforces a strict no-cellphone policy in his classes, and this rule applies to all participants, regardless of their nationality.
Quast is a prominent figure in the ‘Culture in You’ art training program, which is currently underway in Hanoi and will conclude on November 11. The program is a collaborative effort between The Youniverse Education Training and Entertainment Company, the Interstellar Musical Society, and the Center for Journalism Culture, affiliated with the Vietnam Journalists Association.

The essence of this initiative is to empower young individuals by imparting profound cultural knowledge and a diverse range of skills. Australian artists, including Philip Quast, Ann-Maree McDonald, and Nicholas Gentile, lead intensive training sessions as part of the program.
Quast’s unwavering stance against cellphone usage during classes stems from his strong beliefs about education and work ethic, which closely align with Vietnam’s educational system. Several schools across the nation have already implemented a similar ban on smartphones in classrooms, recognizing its benefits.
According to the actor, this measure significantly enhances discipline and focus, which are essential for learning and self-improvement.
Throughout the program, Quast assumes the role of both expert and mentor, focusing on instilling confidence in young artists and helping them master the art of onstage presence and facial expressions.
When asked about his motivation for joining the program, Quast expressed his desire to pass on his skills and extensive experience to the next generation. He wants to ensure that young Vietnamese artists can benefit from his knowledge of international stage techniques, unlocking their true potential and fostering a deeper appreciation for their national cultural heritage.
The celebrated Australian actor encourages young Vietnamese participants to embrace their cultural roots rather than merely imitating Western practices. As part of the program, he is eager to share his expertise in vocal and stage performance, as well as offer insights into the dynamics of working collaboratively.
Beyond his role in the training program, Quast will also inspire art enthusiasts through a live concert titled ‘The Road I Took,’ scheduled for November 7 in Hanoi. During this concert, he will share stories of his life and treat the audience to classical melodies that played a pivotal role in his journey to stardom.
