The Department of Broadcasting, Television, and Electronic Information, a division of the Ministry of Information and Communications, announced that Netflix will commence operations in Vietnam on Monday, confirming the news that many in the industry had anticipated.

As per Vietnam’s Law on Cinematography, Netflix’s services will be permitted to operate as a film distribution platform via the Internet, a move that aligns with the country’s regulatory framework.

This law, the department explained, mandates that all films made available on the platform undergo a classification process and are duly reported to the relevant state authorities, ensuring compliance with content regulations.

In its diligence, the department previously identified that Netflix offered a range of programs classified as TV content, including reality TV shows covering sports, travel, culinary arts, relationships, and weddings. To adhere to current regulations, the department formally requested Netflix on December 12 to remove all TV programs from their platform.

Subsequently, the department convened meetings to elucidate the legal procedures and requirements for broadcasting and television services, addressing any concerns raised by Netflix regarding these processes.

Demonstrating its commitment to compliance, Netflix has since modified its services to align with the management authorities’ directives, removing all TV programs from their platform. Moreover, the company has pledged to exclusively offer films that conform to Vietnam’s Law on Cinematography upon its official launch in the country next Monday, as communicated by the department.

We are thrilled to welcome Netflix to Vietnam and believe their presence will enrich the entertainment options available to our citizens while also contributing to the vibrant media landscape that is evolving in our country.
