THE HANOI TIMES — On December 25, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s bustling southern hub, inaugurated its first public electric bus route within the Con Dao Special Economic Zone. This milestone underscores the city’s commitment to fostering an eco-conscious public transportation network for the renowned island destination.
According to the Public Transport Management Center, under the auspices of the city’s Department of Construction, electric bus route No. 173 services 39 strategically located stops, connecting high-demand areas such as Con Dao Airport and Con Dao Market.

Spanning 17 kilometers, the route offers a 30-minute journey, with 114 daily trips scheduled between 5 AM and 7 PM. This service provides commuters and visitors with an affordable and efficient travel option, priced between VND5,000 and 40,000 (US$0.2 to US$1.7) based on distance.
The buses feature a design inspired by Con Dao’s natural beauty, incorporating blue for the sea, green for forests, yellow for sunlight, and a dolphin emblem symbolizing friendliness and reliability—core principles of the public transport service.
Looking ahead, the center plans to introduce five additional routes (174–178), aiming to cover over 90% of key locations within the economic zone. The expanded network will encompass six routes totaling approximately 74 kilometers, serving the majority of the special zone’s road infrastructure.
Electric buses with capacities ranging from 28 to 60 seats will be deployed, particularly on routes connecting the island’s central area to Con Dao Airport, a 17-kilometer distance.
This initiative aligns with Ho Chi Minh City’s participation in Vietnam’s national green energy transition program, reflecting its dedication to achieving net-zero emissions.
Situated 230 kilometers off the coast of Ho Chi Minh City, Con Dao has been dubbed “the most mysterious island on earth” by Lonely Planet and Travel + Leisure. The archipelago comprises 16 mountainous islands and islets, covering 75 square kilometers and home to 5,000 residents.
Renowned for its untouched beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and dense forests protected by Con Dao National Park, the island also holds historical significance. It is the site of the Con Dao Prison and Hang Duong Cemetery, the final resting place of national heroine Vo Thi Sau.
With its eco-friendly resorts and turtle conservation initiatives, Con Dao exemplifies Vietnam’s harmonious blend of natural splendor, rich history, and sustainable tourism.
