Discover a world of unexpected forms and experiences, as explained by Hekla.

The lagoon in question is an artificial creation, primarily sourced from the neighboring Svartsengi geothermal power facility. This power plant utilizes superheated water emitted from the earth’s surface near a lava flow to effectively generate electricity via its interconnected turbines. Following this energy conversion process, the resulting steam and hot water are subsequently directed through a heat exchanger, which in turn supplies heat for a local municipal water heating system. Finally, the water is transported into the lagoon, completing the cycle.

The underground geological layers are responsible for providing the rich mineral content that is necessary for our plant’s operations. This mineral content is brought to the surface by utilizing hot water. Unfortunately, due to the high mineral concentration, the water cannot be recycled and must be carefully disposed of in the surrounding landscape. The landscape in question is a permeable lava field, which varies in thickness from 50 cm (20 in) to 1 m (3.3 ft).

Once the minerals have formed a deposit, the water is able to reinfiltrate the ground. However, over time, these deposits make the ground impermeable. As a result, our plant needs to constantly dig new ponds in the nearby lava field to ensure that operations can continue smoothly.

Pamukkale, which translates to ‘Cotton Castle’ in Turkish, is a city situated in the inner Aegean region within the River Menderes Valley. These waters are abundant in hydrogen carbonate and calcium, leading to the formation of calcium bicarbonate precipitates. If you are interested in exploring Pamukkale, we offer various tour options, including 1 and 2-day bus tours from Cappadocia to Ephesus. Originally observed in the early 1800s amidst the geysers and sulfuric bubblings of Yellowstone National Park, this remarkable natural wonder has captivated visitors for over a century. The pool boasts a vibrant hue of blue that is complemented by concentric rings of color ranging from red to green. This extraordinary spectacle is a result of pigmented bacteria and microbes flourishing in the warm, mineral-rich waters surrounding the hot spring. The colors evolve in sync with the changing seasons, growing more intense or subdued depending on the prevailing bacterial population. Interestingly, the central portion of the pool, where the water emerges from underground, is so hot that it is completely sterile. Consequently, the spring maintains its astonishingly clear and deeply saturated blue color throughout the year.

The Grand Prismatic Spring is a stunning natural marvel that captivates visitors with its breathtaking beauty. However, it should be noted that this incredible hot spring requires utmost caution as its scorching temperatures can cause severe harm, capable of even melting flesh to the bone. This dangerous combination of deep blue water with blood-red hues is a surreal sight, as documented by Atlas Obscura.
