Renowned musician Phu Quang, age 72, unfortunately, passed away on December 8th in Hanoi. He had been bravely battling complications caused by diabetes for the past two years.
Quang, whose full name was Nguyen Phu Quang, was born in 1949 in Cam Khe District in the northern province of Phu Tho. He and his family relocated to Hanoi in 1954. In 1985, the composer made a permanent residence in Ho Chi Minh City but continued to frequently visit the capital city, which served as a great source of inspiration for many of his musical works.

Phu Quang is a renowned composer who dedicated a significant portion of his life to composing songs about Hanoi. With an extensive repertoire of around 600 pieces of music, he has left a lasting impact on the world of music. Many of his compositions, such as Em oi, Hanoi Pho (My Dear, Hanoi’s Streets), Hanoi Ngay Tro Ve (Hanoi in the Reunion Day), and Im Lang Dem Hanoi (Hanoi on the Quiet Night), have become famous songs, known and cherished by many.
One of Quang’s most renowned songs centered around the city of Hanoi is titled “My Dear, Hanoi’s Streets”. Originally written by the late poet Phan Vu in 1972, it wasn’t until Quang added his melodic touch that the song gained popularity.
The song made its radio debut in 1987, performed by renowned singer Le Thu. Subsequently, other notable artists like Ngoc Tan, Thanh Lam, and Bang Kieu have also lent their voices to this timeless composition. Over the years, it has come to be recognized as one of the quintessential songs about Hanoi, deeply resonating with all generations of Hanoians.
The songwriter has released two albums, one in 1990 and another in 1995.
Phu Quang has demonstrated immense talent in various artistic domains. Apart from composing numerous soundtracks for films, plays, and ballets, he has also composed a multitude of symphonies and orchestral works. Several segments from his concerts have also become iconic soundbites featured in the Voice of Vietnam Radio’s programs.
In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the title of Excellent Citizen of the Capital in 2014. This honor was bestowed upon him during the celebration of Hanoi’s Liberation Day, marking the 60th anniversary of the historical event that took place on October 10, 1954.
In 2020, Quang was honored with the Grand Prize at the 13th Bui Xuan Phai – For Love of Hanoi Awards for his iconic and timeless songs dedicated to the capital city.
