The film “Old Father” has broken the previous record set by “Flirt with Pregnant Wife Again” two years ago as the highest-grossing Vietnamese movie, with ticket sales in Vietnam reaching over VND200 billion. Meanwhile, “Furie” collected VND200 billion, but it was also screened internationally in the US, Canada, and China.

“Old Father” reached VND100 billion in just four days, surpassing the previous record held by “The Last Egg 3” which achieved the same milestone in six days. The film’s success continued, with it collecting VND31 billion in a single day on March 13, the highest ticket sales for a Vietnamese movie in a single day. It is expected for the film to break further records as it remains popular in cinemas even after 10 days since its release.

Tran Thanh, the actor, director, and producer of “Old Father,” expressed his gratitude for the film’s success and the audience’s love for it. As of now, the film has sold 2.4 million tickets, providing a much-needed boost to Vietnam’s cinema industry amidst the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Old Father” tells the story of Sang, an elderly motorbike rider living in a low-income neighborhood in Ho Chi Minh City. Despite his poverty and illness, Sang always puts his family first. The film, with an estimated production cost of VND23 billion (US$1 million), features a talented cast including Tran Thanh, People’s Artist Ngoc Giau, Le Giang, Tuan Tran, Ngan Chi, La Thanh, Quoc Khanh, Le Trang, Che Nguyen Quynh Chau, and Minh Tu.

Based on a web drama directed by Vu Ngoc Dang, the “Old Father” movie adaptation gained immense popularity upon release on YouTube in early 2020, accumulating over 90 million views for its five episodes.

Alongside “Old Father,” the top-grossing Vietnamese films to date include “Flirt with Pregnant Wife Again” with VND191.8 billion, “Dreamy Eyes” with VND180 billion, “Perfect Strangers” with VND175 billion, “Jailbait” with VND171 billion, “Furie” with VND160 billion (VND200 billion including international markets), and “The Last Egg 3” with VND165 billion.
