The Iconic Flag Raising Ceremony at Ba Dinh Square

On September 2, 1945, the national flag of Vietnam was first hoisted in Ba Dinh Square as President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Over the past 70 years, this flag has proudly flown over Ba Dinh Square, symbolizing the nation’s enduring spirit and sovereignty.

The daily flag raising ceremony at Ba Dinh Square is a revered national tradition, conducted with precision and honor in front of the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. At 5:44 AM, the soldiers of Mission 275 from the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum’s Protection High Command march in perfect formation to the flagpole, accompanied by the stirring melody of “Marching under the Military Flag”.

Leading the procession are soldiers bearing the “Determined to Win” military flag, followed by 34 soldiers who represent the original 34 cadres and soldiers of the Vietnam Propaganda Unit of the Liberation Army, established in 1944—the precursor to the Vietnam People’s Army.

Upon reaching the flagpole, the soldiers pause and begin the solemn process of raising the flag to the top of the 29-meter pole. At 9:00 PM, the flag lowering ceremony takes place with equal reverence. The flag is carefully lowered and folded before the salute to President Ho Chi Minh.

Attending these ceremonies fills Vietnamese citizens with profound pride and a deep connection to their nation’s history.
