An enlightening event, held in collaboration with India’s Ministry of Culture, took center stage in the capital city of New Delhi. The occasion celebrated the ancient Pali language and sacred texts closely associated with Buddhist teachings.
The ceremony commenced with a traditional lamp-lighting ritual and offering of flowers to Buddha, followed by a special film screening and chanting by monks, creating a serene atmosphere.
Adhidhamma Divas, a significant day, commemorates Lord Buddha’s descent from the celestial realm after imparting the profound Adhidhamma teachings. The ancient Pali language, intricately tied to Buddhism, offers scholars and practitioners a deeper understanding of the religion’s insights.
Abhijit Halder, Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), emphasized the declaration of Pali as a classical language during the event. He highlighted the importance of youth engagement in learning this ancient language and the organization’s efforts to involve young people actively.
“While India is the country of origin for this language, we recognize the need to show respect and regard. By declaring Pali a classical language, we aim to foster positivity and encourage the spread of Pali, facilitating exchanges between countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and India,” added the IBC Director General.

The event, graced by the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister of Culture Sri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju, witnessed the participation of approximately 2000 delegates and monks from around the globe.
A student attendee praised the initiative, stating that it aligned with the revival of ancient culture. She quoted the Prime Minister’s emphasis on the significance of languages like Pali, Sanskrit, and Prakrit, and expressed her belief in preserving these languages in the present day.
“With countless manuscripts yet to be read and their languages fully realized, studying Pali, Sanskrit, and Prakrit is essential to uncovering the vast ocean of Indian culture and traditions that we are yet to explore,” she added, highlighting the importance of such initiatives for preservation.
Dr. Demenda Porage, Deputy Secretary-General at IBC, remarked, “India, a land rich in philosophy and ancient educational hub, is once again taking the lead to spread peace worldwide through the timeless teachings of Buddha.”
The gathering, comprising scholars, monks, and young experts from diverse backgrounds, underscored the universal relevance of Buddha’s teachings and the shared responsibility to safeguard this invaluable knowledge.
