Should he be granted Vietnamese nationality, Rafaelson wishes to be known as Nguyen Xuan Son, a name he has carefully chosen to reflect his new identity.
Rafaelson has pledged his loyalty to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and is committed to fulfilling all the obligations that come with being a Vietnamese citizen, as outlined in the country’s constitution and laws.
Additionally, he intends to retain his Brazilian citizenship, as permitted by Brazilian law, to preserve his rights and connections to his country of origin.
Born in 1997 in Pirapemas, a municipality in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, Rafaelson’s journey to Vietnam began in 2020 when he joined Thep Xanh Nam Dinh FC, based in the northern province of Nam Dinh.
His football career in Vietnam flourished as he went on to play for Da Nang FC in the central city of Da Nang and Quy Nhon Binh Dinh FC in the south-central province of Binh Dinh. For the 2023-24 V.League 1 season, Rafaelson returned to Thep Xanh Nam Dinh.
Rafaelson played a pivotal role in Thep Xanh Nam Dinh’s success during the 2023-24 season, helping the team secure the V.League 1 championship. His exceptional performance was recognized with a hat-trick of awards, including Best Player, Top Scorer with an impressive 31 goals in 24 matches, and Best Goal of V.League 1.
The previous season also saw Rafaelson excel as a player, as he claimed the Top Scorer title while playing for Quy Nhon Binh Dinh FC, with a total of 16 goals.
