Mathias Olivera, a defender for Uruguay, emerged as the hero as his goal propelled his team to a quarter-final berth in the Copa America. In a hard-fought encounter, Uruguay demonstrated their prowess, securing their first victory over the United States since the 1993 Copa America tournament.

The match, held in Kansas City, Missouri, was a tense and physical affair. Uruguay’s Maximiliano Araujo and US defender Tim Ream collided in the 27th minute, resulting in Araujo’s substitution. The Americans started brightly but Uruguay gradually gained a foothold and imposed their style on the game.

Uruguay created the better chances in the first half, with Cristian Olivera whipping in a dangerous cross that Darwin Nunez narrowly missed. The South Americans continued to threaten and eventually broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. Ronald Araujo’s header was parried back into the box by US goalkeeper Matthew Turner, and Olivera was on hand to bundle the ball into the net. The goal, given after a VAR review, put Uruguay in the ascendancy.

The US, needing a win to boost their qualification chances, fought back and had a great opportunity to equalize in the 75th minute. Christian Pulisic’s deflected shot, however, was cleared off the line by Manuel Ugarte, denying the hosts. Despite their efforts, the Americans couldn’t find a breakthrough, and Uruguay’s defense stood firm until the final whistle.

With this win, Uruguay topped their group, winning three out of their first-round matches for the first time since 1959. Panama, with a 3-1 victory over Bolivia, finished second, while the US missed out on qualification, trailing by three points.
