Six footballers were arrested on charges related to gambling and match-fixing, shaking the Vietnamese football community.

The arrests include five players from the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Club and one from the Dong Nai Club. The players are alleged to have thrown matches, underperforming, and deliberately losing to benefit from gambling payouts.

Goalkeeper N.S.H., midfielder L.B.G.H., striker P.V.P., midfielder N.Q.H., and midfielder T.K.A. were charged with gambling and match-fixing. Another player, N.K.D., faced allegations of organizing gambling activities.

In one instance, during a match between Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Dong Nai in November 2023, N.S.H., L.B.G.H., P.V.P., N.Q.H., and N.K.D. allegedly underperformed and chose not to attack, leading to their team’s 0-2 defeat. They each received VND24 million ($942) after the match.

A similar incident occurred in the Ba Ria-Vung Tau versus SHB Da Nang game in December 2023. N.S.H., L.B.G.H., P.V.P., N.Q.H., and T.K.A. placed bets on SHB Da Nang Club through online gambling websites and deliberately played below their potential. As a result, Ba Ria-Vung Tau lost 1-3 to SHB Da Nang.

These actions not only violate the integrity of the sport but also damage the trust and enthusiasm of fans and supporters. The Vietnamese football community is now calling for stricter regulations and oversight to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
