Phan Thi Thang, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, met with Shawn Steil, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam, in Hanoi on February 21.
During the meeting, Ambassador Shawn Steil expressed gratitude to Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang for taking the time to meet with the delegation. He shared that the purpose of the visit was to prepare for the upcoming trip of Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, and a trade delegation of about 200 businesses who will be visiting and working in Vietnam from March 26-29.
This will be the largest trade delegation in the history of bilateral relations between the two countries and is part of the Canadian Government’s effort to diversify its partners and implement the Indo-Pacific Strategy.
Additionally, the two countries will also be organizing the Second Meeting of the Vietnam-Canada Joint Economic Committee to enhance bilateral economic cooperation.

Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang expressed her joy and appreciation for the working group plan of the Canadian Government and businesses led by the Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade, and Economic Development.
With the participation of nearly 200 businesses, the delegation demonstrated that the Canadian Government and businesses value the economic cooperation relationship with Vietnam and wish to further expand development in the future.
The Ministry is ready to closely coordinate with the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam and the Canadian Ministry of Global Affairs to welcome Minister Mary Ng and the delegation. They will organize productive working sessions to achieve the best results. Both sides will share information, discuss issues, and effectively resolve challenges during the second meeting of the Vietnam-Canada Joint Economic Committee and in meetings of working groups. This will build upon the successes of the first meeting and contribute to the development of bilateral trade and investment relations.
Ambassador Shawn Steil expressed his appreciation for the close cooperation between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and hoped that the Second Meeting of the Vietnam-Canada Economic Committee, as well as the upcoming trip of Minister Mary Ng and the trade delegation, will bring specific and positive results, effectively implementing Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, in which Vietnam is one of its valued partners.
Vietnam is currently Canada’s largest trading partner in ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching nearly CAD 14 billion (USD 10.37 billion) in 2023. Vietnam is also an important partner of Canada in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which has provided numerous opportunities for Canadian products and services to access the Vietnamese and ASEAN markets.
