Vietnam secured the second position in the overall standings at the 16th World Wushu Championships (WWC), trailing only the Chinese team, according to the Sports Authority of Vietnam quoted by VNA.

On Tuesday morning (Vietnam time), the Vietnamese Wushu team delivered an exceptional performance, earning three gold medals in the men’s 70kg, women’s 48kg, and women’s 60kg sanda (fighting) categories through the remarkable efforts of Huynh Do Dat, Nguyen Thi Lan, and Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, respectively.

Of particular note, Thuy clinched the gold medal by defeating Indonesian athlete Roshibina Devi Naorem with a score of 2-0.

This victory marks Thuy’s first world gold medal in her competitive career.

Before this, the Vietnam wushu team had won two gold medals in the taolu (performance) category, both achieved by martial artist Dang Tran Phuong Nhi.

Nhi’s achievement stands as the best result ever for Vietnamese wushu at the World Championship.

The 19-year-old athlete also obtained a silver medal in the women’s nandao taolu.

The 16th World Wushu Championships (WWC) took place in Texas, U.S.A., from November 17 through Tuesday, bringing together more than 500 athletes from 72 countries and territories worldwide.

There were 11 sets of medals on offer in the men’s taolu category and an equal number for the women’s taolu event, with an additional seven sets of medals awarded for the sanda events for both men and women, ranging from 48kg to 75kg.

The Vietnamese delegation comprised 13 athletes participating in this year’s competition.

In the 2019 edition, Vietnamese athletes only won one gold, four silver, and four bronze medals.

The WWC is an international sports championship hosted by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) for the sports of wushu taolu and sanda (sanshou).

It has been held biennially since 1991 and is the pinnacle of the IWUF.
