Spain’s Olga Carmona scored a 29th-minute goal to secure a 1-0 victory over England, earning Spain their first Women’s World Cup title. Tragically, Carmona’s father passed away shortly after the final. The Royal Spanish Football Federation expressed their condolences on social media, sending their deepest sympathies to Olga and her family during this difficult time. Carmona’s father had been battling a long illness and his passing occurred on Friday. In a gesture of support, Carmona’s family and friends chose not to inform her of her father’s death so that she could fully focus on the championship match. Carmona’s mother and brothers had initially traveled to New Zealand during the World Cup’s group stage but returned to Spain to be with their loved ones. They were then able to join Carmona in Australia for the final match.
