A few years ago, Kien’s daughter, affectionately nicknamed Nhim (hedgehog), was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer and required extensive medical treatment at the hospital.

Given his immense love for his daughter, the soldier at that time made it his priority to be discharged from the army so he could fully dedicate himself to caring for the little girl.

Staying by his daughter’s side every day at the hospital during her cancer journey, the father gained a deep understanding of the challenges faced by child patients and their families.

Since then, Kien came up with the idea of opening an eatery where patients only need to pay 1K, which is equivalent to VND1,000 (or 4 U.S. cents), for a delicious and nutritious meal.

When Nhim passed away, her father found himself unable to stop thinking about her. This deep longing prompted him to take action on the idea of opening his own eatery.

In late 2021, Kien launched the 1K eatery. The eatery offers a wide variety of delicious and innovative dishes that are sure to satisfy any palate. From classic comfort foods to contemporary fusion cuisine, there is something for everyone at 1K eatery. The menu showcases locally sourced ingredients and highlights the flavors of the season. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty burger, a fresh salad, or a decadent dessert, you’ll find it all at 1K eatery. With its cozy atmosphere and friendly staff, the eatery is the perfect place to gather with friends and family for a memorable meal. Come experience the culinary delights of 1K eatery and discover your new favorite dish.

“Some parents expressed to me that their children eagerly anticipated the scrumptious meals provided by the eatery, eagerly counting down the days until Wednesday and Saturday arrived. I find it incredibly heartwarming to hear such positive feedback,” Kien shared warmly.

The 35-year-old entrepreneur reached out to his friends and generous supporters on Facebook, urging them to join him in operating this charitable venture. He recognized that it would be challenging for him to handle the eatery single-handedly in the future.

Knowing his story, friends and philanthropists from various regions have shown a willingness to lend him a helping hand.

Benefactors generously donated the majority of the equipment and cooking utensils for the eatery, and they also provided Kien with financial support to run the not-for-profit business.

Many dedicated mothers and compassionate volunteers also eagerly came together to offer their culinary skills and prepare nutritious meals for those in need.

The majority of these mothers have young children and are often busy caring for them. However, they always manage to make it to the eatery bright and early in the morning to volunteer their time.

Tran Thu Huyen, a resident of Hanoi’s Thanh Xuan District, has been volunteering at the eatery since its early days. She is grateful to the founder of the eatery and the child patients for giving her the opportunity to discover her potential in the kitchen.

Huyen, a once limited cook, has now expanded her culinary abilities to the point where she can effortlessly prepare and cook meals for an astounding number of 200 people. She previously only catered to a modest three individuals, demonstrating significant growth and skill development. This remarkable progress is a testament to her dedication and passion for the culinary arts. Huyen’s passion has allowed her to transcend limitations and embrace a new level of expertise, culminating in her ability to successfully orchestrate a dining experience for such a large crowd of individuals.

Mai Anh, a volunteer residing in Hanoi, enthusiastically called on her loving husband and two adorable children to join her at the nearby eatery.

She wanted to teach her children the importance of giving back and supporting those in need, Anh said.

These nutritious meals were specially prepared for the child patients at the hospital, bringing delight and nourishment to their day.

Although the eatery was named “1K,” it provides complimentary meals to child patients, Kien explained.

The eatery partnered with the hospital to gain insight into the needs of child patients and their families. This allowed them to determine the appropriate quantity of meal boxes to prepare.

Additionally, the eatery goes above and beyond by preparing an additional quantity of meal boxes to distribute to those in need within the local community.
