THE HANOI TIMES — As the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and Vietnam National Day (September 2) draws near, audiences will be introduced to *Red Rain*, a compelling new feature film honoring one of Vietnam’s most heroic historical chapters.

Penned by acclaimed writer Chu Lai, *Red Rain* draws inspiration from the legendary 81-day defense of the Quang Tri Citadel during the summer of 1972—a pivotal battle against American forces. The film pays poignant tribute to the unwavering courage, sacrifice, and resilience of Vietnamese soldiers, civilians, and leaders who faced unimaginable adversity.
A newly released teaser trailer captures both the haunting and heroic essence of the story. A flare illuminates the night sky, followed by the deafening roar of bombs and gunfire. Amidst chaos, a voice declares, “The Thach Han River is our only route.” Under cover of darkness, silent formations cross the river, undeterred by scorched earth, blood-red waters, or thunderous skies.
The narrative unfolds through the eyes of Squad 1—young men in their twenties, fueled by patriotism and hope for a brighter future. Director Dang Thai Huyen reveals that to authentically recreate the wartime era, the production team constructed a meticulous large-scale set in Quang Tri Town, alongside the historic Thach Han River.

Letters penned from the frontlines of Quang Tri, 1972.
“A painstakingly accurate replica of the Quang Tri Citadel was rebuilt, complete with trenches, tunnels, field hospitals, and defensive stations,” Huyen explains. “Veterans and historical witnesses provided invaluable insights to ensure the film honors the memory of those who endured those harrowing days.”
Red Rain captures not only the chaos of battle but also the profound silence that follows. In these quiet moments, soldiers grapple with loss, longing for family, and the sorrow of youth cut short. It is within this silence—as much as in combat—that the true ferocity of war is laid bare, leaving viewers profoundly moved.
Local film critics describe *Red Rain* as a cinematic act of remembrance. Each frame serves as a symbolic incense stick, lit by today’s generation to honor the fallen heroes of the past. Their sacrifice forged the foundation of peace, and the film strives to preserve this legacy not only in history books but in the hearts of future generations.
The film also acts as a bridge across time, inspiring young audiences to embrace respect, purpose, and responsibility in building a unified, brighter Vietnam. Scheduled to premiere nationwide on September 2, this poignant tribute reminds us that freedom is not granted—it is earned.
