THE HANOI TIMES — For the first time, Hanoi has secured a spot among Asia’s top 10 happiest cities and ranks 17th globally, according to Time Out’s 2025 Urban Quality of Life Survey.

This year’s survey gathered insights from over 18,000 Asian residents, who shared what brings joy to their urban lives—from culture and cuisine to nightlife, community spirit, and overall quality of life. Their responses painted a vibrant picture of happiness across the continent.

“While metrics like environment, economy, and health are crucial, it’s the smaller details that truly matter—a sense of belonging in your neighborhood, access to green spaces, art, culture, and the city’s natural beauty,” noted Time Out.

Hanoi’s allure lies in the simple pleasures of daily life. A remarkable 88% of residents report feeling happy, finding joy in moments like savoring morning coffee at a sidewalk café or strolling around Hoan Kiem Lake at dusk. Here, happiness isn’t about grandeur but about rhythm, warmth, and connection.

Dao Nguyen Ha Linh, 36, a local resident, reflects: “Hanoi’s magic is in its small moments—the scent of street food, the serenity of a temple bell, the sunset over West Lake. It’s a city where life feels complete yet unrushed, simple yet profoundly fulfilling.”

Hanoi’s happiness is nurtured by thoughtful urban planning. Investments in green spaces, public amenities, and community programs foster a strong sense of connection and belonging. Visitors can wander tree-lined boulevards, explore bustling markets, or join vibrant cultural festivals.

Time Out suggests travelers dive into the Old Quarter’s lively streets, enjoy local beer while observing daily life, and experience a traditional water puppet show. Iconic landmarks like the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hoa Lo Prison Relic, Temple of Literature, Ngoc Son Temple, and Hoan Kiem Lake offer deep insights into the city’s rich history and culture.

Ranking among Asia’s top five happiest cities highlights Hanoi’s evolution into a vibrant capital that seamlessly blends modern living with cultural richness, friendliness, and tranquility. These qualities, now recognized as pillars of well-being, make Hanoi a city that feels both authentic and alive.

Globally, Hanoi stands as the 17th happiest city and Vietnam’s sole representative in the top 20. For visitors, this ranking is more than a statistic—it’s a testament to a place where heritage, lifestyle, and joy intertwine, leaving lasting impressions long after the journey ends.
