Phuong became a member of the Japanese club last year after being transferred from his previous team, LPBank Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC, a Vietnamese league side. Despite high expectations from fans, the 28-year-old forward had a disappointing season. He did not play any official minutes for Yokohama, who were in the top-tier J1 League at the time, and was often left out of match registrations. As a result, he was even demoted to the reserve team. Yokohama FC finished last in the J1 League in 2023 and was subsequently relegated to the J2 League. Despite not being a major part of the coach’s plans, Phuong’s contract has been renewed, allowing him to remain at the club for the 2024 season. Fans are hopeful that in the less competitive environment of the J2 League, Phuong will have more opportunities to play. In the past season, Phuong only made one appearance in a J.League Cup match against Nagoya Grampus. His lack of game time has impacted his chances with the Vietnam national team. Although he was called up in September, he was not selected for the squad for the AFC Asian Cup 2023, which was led by French coach Philippe Troussier. In 2016, Phuong signed with Mito Hollyhock in the J2 League but mainly remained on the bench during his time there.
