Coach Kim Sang Sik’s team has set their sights on the semifinals against Singapore.

Vietnam has showcased their offensive prowess in the tournament so far, ranking second in the number of goals scored, just behind Thailand, who have dominated with 18 goals.

The team’s striking prowess is evident with naturalized striker Nguyen Xuan Son, and teammates Nguyen Quang Hai and Nguyen Tien Linh, each finding the back of the net twice. Adding to the team’s firepower, Nguyen Van Toan, Nguyen Van Vi, Nguyen Hai Long, Bui Vi Hao, and Doan Ngoc Tan have all contributed with a goal each.

What sets Vietnam apart is their solid defense, conceding only two goals in the group stage, the best defensive record thus far. The Philippines come in second, conceding three goals, followed by Thailand with four.

The semifinal matches will see Vietnam traveling to Singapore for the first leg on December 26 at the Jalan Besar Stadium, and then returning home to host The Lions at the Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho Province on December 29 for the decisive second leg.

In the other semifinal fixture, The Philippines will take on Thailand, hosting the first leg on December 27 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila before traveling to the Rajamangala National Stadium in Thailand for the return match on December 30.

The 2024 ASEAN Championship, also known as the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup, commenced on December 8 and will culminate with the final showdown on January 5, 2025. Vietnam was placed in Group B, facing off against Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar.

Group A comprised Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste.

The group stage witnessed each team engaging in two home and two away matches, with the top two sides from each group progressing to the semifinals. The semifinals and final will be played in a two-legged knockout format.

Vietnam is determined to make their mark in this tournament and reach the final showdown.
