The men’s football final of the Paris 2024 Olympics delivered a thrilling spectacle as Spain and France battled it out for the gold medal. The game ended in a 3-3 draw at the conclusion of normal time, requiring extra time to determine the champion. Spain ultimately emerged victorious, with Camello scoring two crucial goals in extra time to secure their first Olympic men’s football title since 1992.

It was a game full of twists and turns. France took an early lead through Enzo Millot, who capitalized on a loose ball in the box and fired it into the top left corner. However, Spain quickly equalized through Fermin Lopez, who found the net with a first-time finish. Lopez then put Spain ahead with his second goal of the game, and Alex Baena extended their lead with a superb free-kick into the top left corner.

With a 3-1 lead, Spain looked to be in control, but France refused to give up. Maghnes Akliouche pulled one back for the hosts, and then, in a dramatic turn of events, a VAR review awarded France a penalty. Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up and converted the spot-kick, equalizing the game and sending the French fans into a frenzy.

As the game headed into extra time, both teams fought tirelessly. Spain’s Benat Turrientes hit the bar with a powerful drive, but it was Camello who became the hero for Spain. He lobbed the ball over the stranded Restes to give Spain the lead, and then, in the final seconds, he sealed the win with a brilliant finish after a superb save from the French keeper.

Spain’s coach, Santi Denia, expressed his joy and pride in his team’s achievement: “It is something beautiful, but above all, I’m happy for the players and the way they achieved the win. It was an amazing match against a high-level French team, and I’m proud of the model of play we represent.”

The victory marked a historic moment for Spain, ending a 32-year wait for an Olympic men’s football gold medal. It was a well-deserved triumph for a team that demonstrated resilience, skill, and a never-say-die attitude throughout the tournament.

Alex Baena, one of Spain’s standout performers, praised his teammate Camello, who came off the bench to score the winning goals: “He [Camello] has been a hard worker since day one, and he deserved his double. He knew he’d be a substitute, but he ended up being the most important player for us.”

Baena, who also won the European Championship with Spain last month, concluded by reflecting on a memorable summer: “I wish the summer never ends. I’m so happy I get to make history with Spain. To win you have to suffer, especially against France in France.”
