Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo, aged 27, has tragically passed away following a cardiac arrest during a match against Brazilian side Sao Paulo on August 22, 2024.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch in the 84th minute, falling to the ground unconscious without any prior contact with another player. He was immediately rushed off the field in an ambulance and admitted to the intensive care unit of Albert Einstein Hospital, where he received urgent medical treatment.
According to a statement released by the hospital, Izquierdo’s death was a result of brain death caused by cardiopulmonary arrest associated with cardiac arrhythmia. The news has left his team, Club Nacional, and the entire football community in a state of profound sorrow and shock.
“With heavy hearts, Club Nacional announces the devastating loss of our cherished player, Juan Izquierdo,” the club expressed in a statement on X. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, teammates, and loved ones. The entire Nacional family is grieving this irreparable loss.”

The Uruguayan Football Association, along with the governing bodies of neighboring countries, expressed their deepest condolences. Alejandro Dominguez, the president of CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, lamented, “South American football is in mourning.”
As a mark of respect, the Brazilian Football Federation announced that a minute’s silence would be observed in every match organized by the federation on Wednesday. Sao Paulo, the club against whom Izquierdo was playing when he collapsed, also expressed their sadness, stating, “It is a sad day for football.”
