Jannik Sinner avoided a suspension after failing two drug tests in March of last year, but the World Anti-Doping Agency is now seeking a ban of up to two years. The case will be heard at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in April, with Sinner’s team filing urgent appeals to allow him to continue playing in the meantime.

A number of players have criticized the tennis authorities for their handling of the situation, including Chilean player Nicolas Jarry, who faced a similar situation in 2020. Jarry was banned for 11 months by the International Tennis Federation after testing positive for anabolic agents, despite explaining that he had unwittingly taken multi-vitamins containing prohibited substances on his doctor’s recommendation.

Australian player Nick Kyrgios was particularly vocal about Sinner’s case, but the Italian remained curious about how the fans at the Rod Laver Arena would react. Sinner was cheered on warmly by the crowd as he took the court and throughout his match against Jarry, ultimately winning 7-6(2) 7-6(5) 6-1 in the afternoon sun.

Sinner expressed his happiness with the supportive crowd, stating that there was a nice atmosphere with some support for both him and his opponent. However, Jarry shared that he struggled mentally in the lead-up to the match due to their contrasting doping histories and wished he had received the same level of support from tennis authorities as Sinner.

Contrasting Experiences

Jarry’s ban in 2020 came about after he tested positive for two anabolic agents. While the governing body accepted his explanation, the ITF had disclosed his provisional suspension four months prior to the sanction. On the other hand, Sinner was cleared of wrongdoing by a doping tribunal, which accepted his explanation that the anabolic agent entered his system through massages from his former physio.

As a result of the tribunal’s decision, Sinner’s results, prize money, and ranking points from the ATP Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells were cancelled. A provisional suspension was applied after each of his positive tests, but he was allowed to continue playing pending the outcome of his appeals.

Jarry expressed his desire for the same treatment Sinner received, stating that he did not think the processes were the same. He acknowledged the difficulty of playing against Sinner and shared that he had to manage his emotions since the draw was announced.

At the end of the match, Sinner and Jarry met at the net for a brief handshake. When asked if he sympathized with Jarry, Sinner responded that he was unaware of the details of Jarry’s case and that he only knew what had happened in his own experience. Sinner will now face local wildcard Tristan Schoolkate for a place in the third round of the Australian Open.
