In the early hours of Saturday morning (Vietnam time), the highly anticipated semifinal match-up between Vietnam’s No. 5 seed, Linh, and Thailand’s top-seeded player, Thananya Somnuek, took place at the tournament.
The two athletes had a prior encounter in 2023, where Somnuek emerged victorious.
Going into the rematch, Somnuek was favored due to her strength and youthful vigor.
Linh put up a strong fight in the first round, but as the match progressed into the second and third rounds, she started to show signs of fatigue. Somnuek seized the opportunity and dominated the match, ultimately winning with an impressive 5-0 score line of 29/28, 30/26, 30/27, 29/27, and 30/27.
Despite the defeat, Linh made history by claiming the bronze medal, marking her first-ever World Championship medal.
This bronze medal was the sole medal for the Vietnamese boxing team at the tournament this year.
Earlier in the competition, Vo Thi Kim Anh (54kg weight class) and Hoang Ngoc Mai (70kg weight class) were unfortunately eliminated in the quarter-finals, falling short of medal contention.
The other Vietnamese boxers, including Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi, Ngo Thi Mai Chuc, Tran Thi To Nhu, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tran, and Nguyen Huyen Tran, gained invaluable experience from their participation, which will undoubtedly benefit them in future competitions, including the upcoming 2025 tournament.
