The inaugural AFL Asia Cup was hosted at the Thanh Long Sports Complex in Ho Chi Minh City’s Binh Chanh District from December 6 to 8, 2024.
AFL, the governing body for Australian rules football, introduced this unique and dynamic sport to Asia, with the first tournament taking place in Vietnam.
This historic event was exclusively for Asian citizens, featuring 15 teams and approximately 300 players from across ten countries and territories: Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Laos, Pakistan, and Thailand.
The tournament was a free-of-charge event, welcoming spectators to witness the exciting matches and celebrate the growth of this sport in the region.

The competition was fierce, with ten men’s teams and five women’s teams from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Thailand participating.
The final match-up saw Japan and Cambodia face off, with Japan ultimately claiming victory in the men’s category with a score of 17.9 (111) to 3.2 (20). The Japanese team’s skill and determination were unparalleled, securing their top spot in Asia.
In the women’s final, the Thailand Serpents showcased their talent and emerged victorious against the Cambodian Eagles in a thrilling match.
Kouki Ariga of Japan and Irravadee Makris of Thailand were recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Players, solidifying their impact on the field.
AFL is dedicated to the international development of Australian rules football and fostering talent in emerging markets like Asia. This traditional Australian sport combines elements of football, basketball, athletics, and rugby, creating a dynamic and exciting game.
