On May 3, the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) co-hosted their fifth Theoretical Symposium, which focused on “Some theoretical and practical issues on building socialism in Vietnam and Cuba,” according to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA). The event took place on Thursday.

The four preceding editions of the symposium took place in 2012, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

At the fourth edition of the symposium, which was held in November 2018 in Cuba, the two sides discussed practical issues and experiences concerning socio-economic development and political and ideological work that were derived from Vietnam’s Doi Moi (Renewal) and Cuba’s socio-economic model update. This symposium focused on understanding the significant factors in the socio-economic development and political and ideological work of each Party; and analyzing the situation and solutions of each party, thus elucidating some pressing theoretical issues of mutual interest.

The event in Hanoi was co-chaired by Nguyen Xuan Thang, a Politburo member, President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA) and Chairman of the Central Theory Council, and Roberto Morales Ojeda, a Politburo member and permanent member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee. In his introductory statement, Thang underlined the importance of exchanging experiences, and both theoretical and practical aspects of constructing socialism in Vietnam and Cuba as a key element in the collaboration between the two Parties, with the goal of deepening mutual understanding, strengthening, and fostering the unique relationship between the two Parties and populations.

The organization of this type of symposium vividly illustrates the exemplary, faithful, and genuine solidarity between Vietnam and Cuba, he emphasized.

Within the scope of the event, representatives, theorists, and ideologues from both parties delivered speeches and shared their thoughts on constructing and developing party institutions in the economic sphere; cultivating a pool of cadres, particularly those of strategic importance; engaging in political and ideological education among young people; enhancing management of communication, guaranteeing cybersecurity, and ensuring safety; and constructing a socialist-oriented market economy in Vietnam and modernizing Cuba’s socioeconomic model.

Roberto Morales Ojeda declared that both sides are in strong agreement when it comes to the necessity of further reinforcing political and ideological agreement and judiciously adopt international experience in accordance with the core ideology of each nation. Roberto Morales Ojeda affirmed that the two Parties highly agree on the urgent need to continue strengthening political and ideological consensus and selectively absorb international experience in combination with the fundamental ideology of each country.

On May 3 afternoon, Thang welcomed Rosario Penton Diaz, a member of the Political Commission of the Central Committee and director of the Nico Lopez Senior Party School. They discussed personnel planning and strategic cadre training of each political party.

On this special occasion, the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and the Nico Lopez Senior Party School renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation during the 2023-2028 period. This marks another milestone in the two institutions’ shared commitment to collaboration and advancement.

On the same day, Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong hosted a reception in Hanoi for Cuban Ambassador Roberto Morales Ojeda.

President Thượng suggested that the two sides continue to expand and enhance the effectiveness of their bilateral cooperation in the areas of research, assessment, and exchange of theories and practices on innovation and socio-economic development and socialism building in each country; high-level delegation exchanges; and coordination and support at international forums and on global issues.

The Vietnamese State leader once again expressed his unwavering support for the urgent and unreserved abrogation of the blockade and sanctions imposed on Cuba. He reaffirmed Vietnam’s firm and consistent stance on the matter.

The Vietnamese Party, State, and people always accompany, share, and are ready to expand and deepen the special solidarity between the two Parties, States, and peoples, President Tran Dai Quang remarked. He noted that this special solidarity has been an invaluable asset for both sides in their development and international integration process.

Before their visit to Ho Chi Minh City, the Cuban delegation had already been there.

The city is prepared to dispatch experienced experts and officials to Cuba to demonstrate and implement a pilot model of high-tech agricultural development to bolster Cuba’s agricultural sector, Politburo member and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen declared during a reception on May 1.

Roberto Morales Ojeda emphasized that Cuba is eager to strengthen collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City, particularly in promising areas such as agriculture, education, health, sports, and tourism. He also expressed his desire to attract more Vietnamese investors, including those from the bustling economic center of Vietnam.

During their stay, the Cuban delegation visited the Cu Chi Tunnels, a popular historic site in the city, and worked with various local organizations and businesses.
