THE HANOI TIMES Hanoi has unveiled a comprehensive investment plan for the road linking to Gia Binh International Airport in the northern province of Bac Ninh, aiming to bolster the airport’s logistics services.

Duong Duc Tuan, Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, gave the green light to the detailed plan following a meeting where he heard the report from the Department of Planning and Architecture and considered the participants’ insights.

Spanning 28 kilometers across Hanoi, the road is envisioned with 10 lanes, each measuring 120 meters wide, to facilitate high-speed transportation. Hanoi and Bac Ninh are jointly exploring the possibility of introducing a metro line that would connect Gia Binh International Airport to Hanoi’s city center.

The expressway route, carrying an estimated price tag of VND26.7 trillion (US$1.05 billion), will be established through a PPP model. It will seamlessly integrate with existing transportation networks as outlined in approved planning schemes.

According to an official statement, the Hanoi government has instructed the Department of Construction to seek the Ministry of Construction’s approval for aligning the route with the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway. This synchronization ensures connectivity and efficient land utilization.

On the investment front, the Hanoi Department of Finance is scheduled to discuss the mechanism with Bac Ninh authorities by the end of March. Tuan emphasized Hanoi’s commitment to implementing specific mechanisms and policies to expedite progress, uphold quality, safety, and environmental sustainability.

Once realized, the road will serve as a catalyst for the northern gateway area of Hanoi, enhancing transportation connectivity between the capital and Bac Ninh, as well as adjacent provinces. The deputy chairman underscored the expressway’s anticipated role in elevating regional transport infrastructure, alleviating traffic congestion, and fostering economic growth in the North.

Construction of Gia Binh International Airport, situated in Xuan Lai Commune and Gia Binh Town, commenced in December 2024. Spanning an area of 364 hectares, the airport is on track for completion by the end of 2025.

With an estimated investment of VND31.3 trillion ($1.2 billion), Gia Binh Airport is poised to be incorporated into the national airport network plan. Designed as a multifunctional, dual-use 4E class airport adhering to ICAO standards for large airports, it will significantly contribute to the country’s defense-security infrastructure and socio-economic development. The airport will also provide combat readiness for the Vietnam People’s Public Security Air Force.

While primarily catering to official flights for Party and State leaders, as well as international dignitaries, the airport will also be equipped to handle cargo and passenger transport upon request.

At the airport’s groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the urgency of constructing Gia Binh International Airport to the highest quality standards. He underscored its status as a national key project, vital to the defense and security infrastructure system.

According to the Ministry of Transport, Vietnam is on course to have 31 airports by 2030, comprising 15 international and 16 domestic airports. This number could rise to 34 airports by 2050, including 19 domestic ones.
