The PM GatiShakti initiative is a transformative approach to infrastructure development in India, and the government is now taking steps to extend its reach beyond the country’s borders. This expansion involves collaboration with neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Senegal, and Gambia to harness the power of geospatial technology in infrastructure planning and execution.

By leveraging geospatial technology, India and its partner countries will be able to streamline infrastructure development, making the process more efficient, coordinated, and transparent. A recent statement from the Indian Commerce Ministry underscores this goal by offering secure access to non-sensitive data for non-governmental entities engaged in developmental activities. This move will enable these developing and underdeveloped nations to adopt Indian best practices, accelerating their journey towards much-needed infrastructure improvements.

Since its launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2021, PM GatiShakti has revolutionized how India undertakes infrastructure projects. The initiative has brought about a paradigm shift by integrating data from various central ministries and states/UTs, resulting in enhanced efficiency, transparency, and synchronization across the country. The utilization of GIS-based tools and real-time monitoring systems further supports informed decision-making in infrastructure planning.

One of the key strengths of PM GatiShakti lies in the integration of over 1,600 data layers, which has led to more streamlined project execution, reduced logistics costs, and improved service delivery nationwide. Additionally, the initiative has expanded its scope to include social sector ministries, addressing gaps in critical areas such as healthcare and education. The platform also plays a vital role in India’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 by promoting sustainable logistics solutions.

Looking to the future, PM GatiShakti aims to incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) into its planning processes. This integration will further enhance India’s infrastructure management capabilities and keep the country at the forefront of technological innovation.

The PM GatiShakti initiative is closely aligned with India’s National Logistics Policy (NLP), addressing critical infrastructure gaps and improving the country’s logistics performance. This alignment has had a tangible impact, as evidenced by India’s improved ranking in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index Report (2023), climbing up to 38th place from 44th in 2018. The sophisticated and comprehensive nature of this master plan has the potential to serve as a model for other developing nations, solidifying India’s leadership and influence in the Global South.

By offering access to the Gati Shakti Masterplan to countries worldwide, India is poised to become a key influencer in global infrastructure development. Sharing its best practices and technological advancements, India can establish itself as a pioneer, with its success serving as a blueprint for other nations. This initiative underscores India’s aspiration to become a ‘Vishwaguru’, a global leader whose impact extends far beyond its borders.

As the world takes note of India’s achievements, PM GatiShakti stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure while also contributing to sustainable development for future generations, not just within India but on a global scale.
