At a recent event in New York, Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammad acknowledged the crucial role played by the Group of Friends in advancing education topics on the UN agenda. She emphasized key areas of focus, including securing financing for education, safeguarding teachers’ rights, and harnessing the power of digital transformation in education to get Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 back on track.
Representatives from member countries of the Group of Friends engaged in discussions about priorities for promoting education at upcoming UN forums.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, leading Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN, highlighted Vietnam’s active membership in the UNESCO Executive Council and its unwavering support for UNESCO’s global education initiatives. Ambassador Giang commended the Group of Friends for successfully promoting important education-related content and commitments within the draft document for the Summit of the Future, the UN’s flagship event in 2024.
Ambassador Giang suggested that the Group continue to advocate for common positions in other contexts. He also proposed organizing activities involving the Group and other UN member states to foster dialogue and share information about the Group’s significant activities, initiatives, experiences, and practices in each country related to education.
Established in 2020 to commemorate the International Day of Education on January 24, the Group of Friends for Education and Lifelong Learning currently boasts nearly 50 members. The Group actively promotes education topics within the UN agenda and facilitates the sharing of initiatives and best practices to ensure the right to education for all member states.
