Occupying a small area of 3.7 hectares, Ti Top Island is one of the smallest islands in the Ha Long Bay, located in the Quang Ninh province of northern Vietnam. The island’s captivating view and excellent location attract a significant number of tourists every year.
The island is named after Gherman Titov, the pilot of the Vostok II spacecraft, who made his journey just four months after Yuri Gagarin’s historic spaceflight on April 12, 1961.

Gherman Titov was the first person to capture pictures of Earth from space, conduct biomedical experiments, and communicate via radio.
In January 1962, Titov visited Vietnam at the invitation of President Ho Chi Minh. During his visit, he and President Ho Chi Minh named Island No. 48 as Ti Top Island, using a Vietnamese pronunciation of the cosmonaut’s name.

Ti Top Island has a steep slope on one side and an inclined slope on the other side when viewed from above. The beach along its coast has a moon-like shape with smooth white sand, and its crystal-clear blue waters offer visibility of pebbles on the sandy bottom throughout the year. These geographical features make Ti Top Island a must-visit stopover in Halong Bay.
In the past, Ti Top Island was known by the names Nghia Dia or Hong Thap Tu. The name Ti Top was given to commemorate the sailors who lost their lives when a French freighter crashed in Halong Bay.
The island was renamed Ti Top Island after the Russian cosmonaut Gherman Titov visited Halong Bay in 1962, accompanied by President Ho Chi Minh. Visitors can learn about the island’s history in detail through the memorial stone in front of the island.
