THE HANOI TIMES — The media plays an integral role in shaping Hanoi’s identity as a modern and civilized capital city, as emphasized by Nguyen Huy Cuong, Deputy Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Hanoi Party Committee. At the conference themed “Press and Media Contribute to Building an Elegant and Civilized Hanoi,” held on March 24, Cuong highlighted the impact of the press in fostering a sense of civic responsibility and promoting elegant lifestyles among Hanoians.

“Hanoi’s media outlets have successfully raised awareness about civilized behavior and the importance of embracing beautiful lifestyles,” Cuong noted. “They have played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural norms and values that define our city.”

Hanoi’s media landscape is rich with visual programs and written columns that inspire residents to strive for a civilized and modern living environment while preserving their traditional values. This approach ensures that the development of the capital city from now until 2030, and even beyond, is guided by the aspirations of its people, with a vision for the future that extends to 2045.

Do Phu Tho, an expert from the Central Military Commission’s Steering Committee 35, tasked with protecting the Party’s ideological foundation, echoed these sentiments. He emphasized the media’s role as a bridge between the government and the people, reflecting the pulse of society and conveying the thoughts and aspirations of all strata of the population to the local authorities.

Phu Tho also highlighted the press as a trusted source of information, particularly in contrast to the often unreliable nature of social media. “The public relies on mainstream media to verify information,” he said, underscoring the responsibility of journalists in guiding public opinion with accuracy and integrity.

Leading by Example: The Power of Positive Influence

Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, a journalist from Nhan Dan (People) newspaper, reinforced the idea that the press has a duty to guide and shape cultural norms. “Mainstream media has the power to spread positive cultural behaviors within families, communities, and society as a whole,” Thanh stated.

However, Dong Manh Hung, a journalist from the Radio Voice of Vietnam (VOV), offered a different perspective. He pointed out that some mainstream media outlets have struggled to keep up with the changing preferences of news consumers, particularly the youth. “Many articles fail to capture new angles and details, becoming repetitive and preachy,” Hung noted.

To enhance the effectiveness of communication, Hung suggested that Hanoi implement a robust strategy to network with various media outlets, including social media platforms. He also recommended additional training for journalists to help them craft more engaging and inspiring stories. “By leveraging social media, we can better connect with young people,” Hung said.

Tran Thi Van Anh, former Deputy Director of Hanoi’s Department of Culture and Sports, applauded the insights shared by the journalists and experts. “These observations are incredibly valuable for both the government and the media to refine their communication strategies,” she said. “It demonstrates a deep understanding of Hanoi’s unique culture and a genuine passion for fostering elegance and civility among its residents.”
