The Gia Village Festival: A Vibrant Celebration of History and Culture

The annual Gia Village Festival in Yen Son Commune, My Duc District, Hanoi, is a vibrant celebration of the village’s rich history and unique culture. Held on March 10 according to the lunar calendar, the festival honors General Ly Phung Man, a valiant warrior who aided King Ly Nam De in defeating invaders and establishing the country of Van Xuan in 542.

For years, the Gia Village Festival has been one of the most renowned festivals in the Doai area, alongside the Dam Race Festival and Thay Pagoda’s Festival. Its distinctiveness lies in its grand procession, involving approximately 500 local men. These men are divided into 22 groups, each donning different costumes and carrying flags, drums, an altar, a palanquin, and parasols.

The procession commences at Quan Gia and traverses the village’s dike until it reaches Van Chi, where a solemn rite is performed. Thereafter, the procession returns to Quan Gia, reenacting General Ly Phung Man’s historic battle against the invaders. This blend of tradition and pageantry captivates locals and draws visitors from far and wide.

With its unique cultural offerings, the Gia Village Festival stands out as a beacon of Vietnamese heritage. The festival’s rituals and performances provide a window into the village’s past, honoring the valiant deeds of General Ly Phung Man and his contribution to the nation’s history.
