The 13th annual Vietnamese Poetry Day, themed “Towards the Nation’s Seas and Islands,” brought together over 150 poets from more than 40 countries worldwide. This celebrated event, held at the historic Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam (the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first National University), showcased the richness of Vietnamese literature while fostering global cultural exchange.
Nguyen Huu Thinh, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers’ Association, emphasized the event’s dual purpose: to highlight Vietnam’s literary heritage amidst the growing presence of foreign literature in the country and to share the Vietnamese people’s deep connection to their seas and islands with poetry enthusiasts worldwide.
International poets took center stage, sharing their works and paying homage to Vietnamese traditions. Notable moments included Slovakian poet Neeva Mukova’s recitation of Ho Xuan Huong’s poetry in Vietnamese, and contributions from South Africa’s Indra Wossou and England’s Graham Mort, who presented their latest Vietnam-inspired pieces. A poignant ceremony saw poems by both Vietnamese and international authors attached to red balloons, released skyward in a symbolic gesture of unity.
The festival captivated attendees with diverse activities, including an exhibition of international literature, Vietnamese works translated and published abroad, book displays from local publishers, calligraphy demonstrations, and folk art performances.
