Known as hoa Giay in Vietnamese, Bougainvillea gets its name from its thin, papery bracts. This tropical vine is renowned for its resilience to drought and its extravagant display of bright flowers.

Recently, a series of photographs captured the moment when the paper flower tree, located at D’ran Pass in Tram Hanh Commune, burst into a brilliant display of pink and purple hues. This spectacle quickly went viral on tourism forums, attracting attention to its beauty.

This particular tree was planted 35 years ago by Bui Hien, a female homeowner in Dalat, along with her family. They also constructed a wooden house behind the tree, creating a unique and picturesque garden setting.

Bougainvillea is relatively low-maintenance once it matures. Gardeners need only irrigate when the plant starts to wilt and the soil dries out.

The genus Bougainvillea is also popular among Bonsai enthusiasts due to its ease of planting and vibrant flowers. It can be cultivated as an indoor houseplant in temperate regions, and its size can be managed through bonsai techniques.

Every summer, from May to June, the paper flower tree enters its flowering season, attracting tourists who flock to Da Lat to admire its beauty.

Unlike the typical bougainvillea vines that crawl along fences or door frames, this particular tree is a woody variety. Its strong stump and wide foliage provide a cool shade over the entire yard, inviting visitors to stop and capture memorable pictures.

The purple and pink flowers of this tree form clusters at the ends of its branches, and it blooms all year round. The warmer and sunnier the weather, the more vibrant the flower colors become, creating a stunning visual spectacle.

The leaves of this bougainvillea variety are alternate, simple, and ovate-acuminate. The actual flowers are small and white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by brightly colored bracts in shades of pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white, or yellow. Bougainvilleas are rapid growers, thriving in tropical and subtropical climates and flowering year-round. They can grow to heights of one to 12 meters, scrambling over other plants with their spiky thorns.

To reach this picturesque spot, visitors can drive about 30km from the city center towards D’ran Pass. The tree is conveniently located near the main road, in front of a porch, making it easily accessible and visible.

Tourists are advised to ask for permission from the homeowner before taking pictures with the tree, and they should be careful not to break any branches or pick the flowers.
