The renowned and long-established American travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveller, cited a study by the UK’s Post Office, proclaiming that Vietnam has claimed the top spot for the first time.

According to the article, Hoi An, once a bustling merchant port city, now offers exceptional value for money, especially for budget-conscious travelers. This is due to the relatively lower prices at local eateries and drinking establishments.

The Post Office’s Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer takes into account the average local prices of eight tourist essentials. Hoi An stands out with its affordable offerings, such as beer priced at approximately US$1.47, Coca-Cola at US$0.91, and sunscreen at US$4.70. As a result of these lower costs, Hoi An has climbed up the rankings from its sixth position in 2023 to secure the number one spot this year.

The write-up also recommends that visitors spend their mornings on the pristine beaches, their afternoons exploring the myriad of captivating historical sites, and their evenings discovering the most delectable offerings at the Hoi An Night Market.

Furthermore, according to the Skyscanner 2024 UK Travel Trends Report, Hoi An is ranked among the best places globally for a good night’s rest, based on hotel sleep quality scores.

The 2024 report by the Post Office placed Cape Town, the previous year’s winner, in second place. While local costs have increased, it still offers the best value for a three-course meal at roughly US$44.64.

Following Cape Town are Mombasa in Kenya, Tokyo in Japan, and the Algarve region in Portugal, respectively.

The list continues with Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, Sunny Beach in Bulgaria, Kuta in Bali, Marmaris in Turkey, and Paphos in Cyprus, rounding off the top ten.

Condé Nast Traveller noted that this list of the world’s best-value destinations for 2024 showcases places where travelers can make the most of their money.

The Post Office’s report considered various factors that could influence holiday choices in 2024, including exchange rates, dining costs, and the expense of visiting popular tourist attractions in each location.
