THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam Airlines successfully landed a Boeing 787-9 aircraft at Long Thanh International Airport on December 15 at 3:58 PM, departing from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
This milestone marks the first technical flight at the newly constructed airport, ahead of its grand opening scheduled for December 19.

Upon arrival, the aircraft received a traditional water salute and was then towed to its designated parking stand, where standard commercial flight procedures were meticulously followed.
Long Thanh International Airport is poised to welcome its inaugural official flights on December 19, with three aircraft from different airlines departing from Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, landing sequentially at Long Thanh, and returning to Noi Bai.
In preparation for this significant event, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recently urged stakeholders to expedite the construction of Long Thanh International Airport, ensuring its readiness for the first flight and commercial operations by the first half of 2026.

During his inspection of the construction site, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of the first sub-project, which is nearing completion and on track for the December 19 deadline. The second sub-project is also in its final stages, with equipment installation underway to ensure timely operations.
Prime Minister Chinh emphasized the need to accelerate the completion of the third and fourth sub-projects, focusing on ground service facilities.
He commended the dedication of the involved units and encouraged continuous work, including nights and weekends, to expedite progress while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and environmental compliance.
The Prime Minister also called upon the military, particularly Military Region 7 and local units, to provide support and urged the police to enhance security and maintain order at the construction site.
After reviewing the progress of the roads leading to Long Thanh International Airport, Prime Minister Chinh assigned specific tasks to ministries, local authorities, and enterprises, expressing confidence that the airport and its supporting infrastructure will meet international standards.
Spanning over 5,000 hectares in Long Thanh Commune, the airport project is divided into three phases. The first phase, with an estimated cost of $5.4 billion, commenced in 2020. Basic construction is scheduled for completion in 2025, with commercial operations anticipated in the first half of 2026.
Once operational, the airport is projected to accommodate 25 million passengers and handle 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.
