Despite narrowly losing 2-3 to hosts UAE in their final Group G match in the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers in Dubai on June 15, the Vietnamese team still progress among the five best runners-up teams. Coach Park Hang-seo’ side ranked second in Group G with 17 points after eight matches.

Cong Phuong, Hong Duy and Minh Vuong were fielded in the second half as Vietnam increased the pressure on the UAE’s defensive line.

In the 84th minute, striker Tien Linh scored Vietnam’s first goal in the match from Minh Vuong’s assist, narrowing the gap to 3-1.

From Duc Huy’s pass, Minh Vuong turned from provider to scorer in the extra time, as Vietnam closed the game at 3-2 and left the pitch with their heads held high.
