Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that culture is the soul and spiritual bedrock of every nation, serving as a vital source of internal strength. In an era marked by global challenges such as wars, conflicts, climate change, environmental degradation, inequality, and energy crises, culture plays an increasingly critical role in fostering unity, solidarity, and shared responsibility among nations.

Drawing from President Ho Chi Minh’s wisdom that culture must illuminate the path for national progress, the Prime Minister highlighted Vietnam’s view of culture as a guiding light for development. He described it as a form of soft power that drives sustainable growth and international integration.

“We must ensure culture not only strengthens us internally but also becomes a force for international solidarity, compassion during natural disasters, and collective action against climate change,” he stated.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to relevant agencies and diplomatic missions in Vietnam for their collaboration in ensuring the event’s success. He also extended heartfelt sympathy to communities affected by recent storms and floods, underscoring the enduring values of “cultural empathy, national unity, and brotherhood” as living symbols of Vietnam’s humanistic spirit.

Jonathan Baker, UNESCO Representative to Vietnam, conveyed deep sympathy for areas impacted by recent natural disasters in the country. He noted that during times of hardship, culture serves as a powerful reminder of humanity’s shared roots, compassion, and resilience.

Baker also praised the Cultures of the World Festival in Hanoi as a meaningful platform for intercultural dialogue. Here, nations unite to exchange traditional values and creative innovations, collectively working toward a peaceful and sustainable future.

An art performance at the ceremony

The ceremony was graced by Madam Ngo Phuong Lan, spouse of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung, senior government officials, and representatives from nearly 50 embassies and international organizations in Vietnam.

Under the theme “Culture as the Foundation – Art as the Medium,” the festival brought together 48 countries, featuring 45 cultural spaces, 34 international food stalls, 23 performing art troupes, 12 publishing units, and 22 nations participating in the international film showcase.

Following the opening ceremony, a special art performance titled “Colors of Vietnam – Rhythms of the World” captivated the audience. Divided into three chapters—“Melodies of Heritage,” “Modern Colors,” and “Harmony of the World”—the performance seamlessly blended traditional and contemporary arts with 3D mapping technology. It beautifully illustrated Vietnam’s journey from preserving heritage to embracing global integration, where creativity and culture serve as a universal language connecting hearts.

From October 11 to 12, a diverse array of cultural exchange and artistic activities will continue at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel. These events promise to offer both domestic and international visitors an inspiring space of peace, creativity, and friendship among nations.
