In a recent press statement regarding the adoption of a resolution at the 43rd UNESCO General Conference, Deputy FM Van highlighted Vietnam’s pivotal role in proposing the “International Decade on Culture for Sustainable Development.” Co-authored by Vietnam and other nations, this resolution marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time UNESCO has unanimously agreed to launch a new international decade focused on culture since the World Decade for Cultural Development (1988-1997).
The initiative underscores UNESCO’s leadership in positioning culture as a cornerstone of sustainable development, both nationally and globally. It aims to foster peace, drive creative industries, safeguard cultural diversity, promote inclusive economic growth, and strengthen social cohesion. With the endorsement of 71 co-sponsoring countries, the resolution emphasizes culture’s essential role as a source of identity, innovation, and resilience in addressing contemporary challenges.
The resolution calls on the UN to initiate the decade, aiming to transform public perception of culture’s impact and mobilize resources for heritage education, arts, cultural industries, and the creative economy. It also advocates for equitable access to culture, intercultural dialogue, digital cultural engagement, and the integration of cultural knowledge in climate adaptation and environmental protection—paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
Vietnam and its co-sponsors will next present the resolution to the UN General Assembly for formal adoption, setting the stage for the “International Decade on Culture for Sustainable Development” to commence in 2027-2036. Deputy FM Van emphasized that this initiative aligns with Vietnam’s policies on cultural diplomacy and international integration, reinforcing culture as a driving force for social development, national revitalization, and global cultural exchange.
Built on Vietnam’s foreign policy principles of independence, self-reliance, and diversified relations, the initiative reflects the nation’s commitment to proactive global engagement for the greater good. It also underscores Vietnam’s leadership in shaping global development priorities, in line with Resolution 59-NQ/TW, positioning the country as a responsible international partner.
As UNESCO’s largest initiative to date, its adoption by the UN would solidify UNESCO’s cultural leadership and highlight Vietnam’s dedication to fostering a peaceful, prosperous, and humane global future. At the 43rd UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam’s re-election as Vice President underscores its growing influence and credibility in multilateral institutions, reflecting the international community’s trust in its proactive role.
This achievement further validates Vietnam’s foreign policy of diversification, multilateralism, and comprehensive international integration, aligning with the 13th National Party Congress’s vision. As Vice President, Vietnam now holds key positions in six of UNESCO’s major bodies, leveraging its achievements and contributions to advance global education, culture, science, and communication.
Deputy FM Van noted that Vietnam’s success stems from its robust foreign policy, socio-economic progress, and proactive engagement at UNESCO, earning global trust and support. This role enables Vietnam to actively address international issues, promote UNESCO’s programs, and apply its initiatives to drive national development.
