A distinguished delegation, comprising representatives from Da Nang city, Quang Ninh, Son La, and Dien Bien provinces, alongside passionate advocates for Vietnamese cinema, embarked on a significant journey.

During the inaugural event, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan highlighted the delegation’s agenda, which included strategic meetings with prominent partners, esteemed Japanese film entities, and the influential American Film Association.

Dr. Lan underscored the value of participating in renowned festivals like Tokyo and Busan, providing Vietnamese filmmakers with invaluable insights into global film industry development. The Vietnam Film Development Association (VFDA) remains committed to fostering connections between filmmakers, international bodies, and local governments. Their mission is to attract film productions, enhance filming conditions, and establish a vibrant, culturally diverse, and welcoming Vietnamese film identity.

Vietnam’s engagement at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) extends beyond cinema, aiming to intertwine film with tourism and the creative economy. This approach showcases the VFDA and local partners’ forward-thinking strategy to promote Vietnam on the global stage through the power of film, while simultaneously attracting international film ventures, particularly as the industry emerges as a key driver of cultural advancement.

The 2023 festival witnessed the international debut of Bui Thac Chuyen’s film, “Tunnels: Sun in the Dark,” in the World Focus category. Director Chuyen, alongside actors Ho Thu Anh and Diem Hang Lamoon, graced the red carpet at the opening ceremony.

The VFDA delegation’s presence at TIFFCOM, the Tokyo International Film Festival Content Market, is marked by a dedicated booth. Here, they host a seminar offering a deep dive into Vietnamese cinema and organize the “Vietnam Night” event, providing international filmmakers with a unique perspective on Vietnam’s film landscape. Additionally, the delegation promotes the 4th Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF), scheduled to take place in Da Nang from June 28 to July 4, 2026.

Since its inception in 1985, TIFF has evolved into one of Asia’s most prominent film festivals, alongside Busan and Shanghai. Initially held biennially until 1991, it has since become an annual celebration of cinema.
