According to the first report from her family, Tran Thi Tuyen, 60, left her home in Cu Lao Dung town to run a business in Cambodia. However, she can not pay back the debt then was killed by creditors.

After Tuyen’s body was repatriated, her family bought a coffin in the Dong Thap, province, over 130km away from Soc Trang to hold a funeral for her on March 29 according to local customs.

However, the local competent police detect some abnormal details in the report of Tuyen’s family and there was no report of an investigation on any murder case around that time. As a result, functional forces decided to open the coffin to examine the body for further information and it turned out three sandbags instead of a cadaver inside the coffin.

According to Deputy Chairman of Cu Lao Dung district Le Minh Duong, the local investigators defined that it is the son, who drove Tuyen to Dong Thap to buy her own coffin on the previous day to fake the funeral.

Currently, the police are continuing to investigate and clarify Tuyen’s case including whether she held a fake funeral to swindle money and what her debt exactly be.

According to Vietnamese custom, it is a norm for visitors to give a certain amount of money (put in an envelope provided by the family at the funeral) in order to help with the funeral procession which is quite costly.
