Vietnamese star football player Nguyen Cong Phuong will play for Yokohama Football Club at Japan’s professional football league J1 League next year.
This is the final result after a six-month negotiation process between Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Yokohama, Doan Nguyen Duc, chairman of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Football Club told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday.
The contract will last for two years, Duc continued.
After that, whether Cong Phuong will continue playing for Yokohama will depend on the negotiation between him and the Japanese football club.
Yokohama were the runners-up at the J2 League, the second level of the Japanese association football league system, and will compete at J1 League in 2023.
Six years ago, Phuong used to play football in Japan for Mito Hollyhock, but he often sat on the bench.
In the contract with Yokohama, there is no requirement that Phuong should be able to play on the field regularly, Duc elaborated.
“This will depend on the skill and health of Phuong as well as the head coach’s strategies.”
“I often encouraged my players to compete abroad in order to improve their level in all aspects.
“Phuong has been playing for Hoang Anh Gia Lai in the V-League for many years, and it is necessary for him to change the environment to renew himself.”
Players of Hoang Anh Gia Lai previously regrouped on December 20 to prepare for upcoming tournaments in 2023, Duc added.
