The Vietnamese men’s national football team has set its sights on an Asian title and World Cup qualification, with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirming their ambitions on January 6th.
Following their ASEAN championship victory, the Prime Minister met with the players and head coach Kim Sang Sik, commending their journey to the top, particularly the thrilling finals against Thailand.
He recalled the emotional peak of the tournament, when midfielder Nguyen Hai Long scored a last-minute goal, sealing Vietnam’s win and the championship trophy.
Pham Minh Chinh attributed this success to the dedication of the sports sector, the investment of the Party, State, and people, as well as the passionate support of fans across the nation.
This ASEAN Cup victory is a groundbreaking milestone for Vietnamese football, a testament to the country’s unity and national pride, he added.
Vietnam dominated the 2024 tournament, winning all seven matches and scoring a total of 21 goals, the highest among all participating teams.
Striker Nguyen Xuan Son, originally from Brazil, made history as the first Vietnamese player to win both the top scorer and most valuable player awards. Dinh Trieu was also recognized as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh encouraged the team and the entire sports sector to build on this success, urging them to strive for excellence and global recognition. He motivated the players to overcome challenges, work harder, and bring further glory to Vietnamese football.
“While we celebrate this victory, we must also recognize that our journey has just begun,” he said. “We cannot rest on our laurels, and we must continue to push ourselves to achieve new heights and go beyond our limits.”
With their sights set on the future, the Prime Minister affirmed their goals of winning the Asian championship and qualifying for the World Cup.
During this meeting, the Prime Minister presented the team with the First-Class Labor Order, as per the President’s decision. Individual players, including Nguyen Xuan Son and Nguyen Quang Hai, were honored with Third-Class Labor Orders, and 29 team members received certificates of merit.
The team has also received overwhelming support from businesses, with rewards totaling over VND6 billion (US$250,000), and more contributions are expected to pour in.
