Vietnam will take on Indonesia in the men’s football semi-finals at the 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Cambodia this Saturday, following their 1-1 draw against Thailand in their concluding group-stage match on Thursday. The Vietnamese team is now set to face off against the Indonesians in their bid to reach the final.
Vietnam conceded an early goal on Thursday, but they fought back to draw level with an equalizer. Despite the setback, the team showed resilience as they battled to salvage the match.
Achitpol Keereerom took advantage of the Vietnamese defender Luong Duy Cuong’s slip and was able to breeze past Doan Huy Hoang in the goal, scoring in the first three minutes of the match.
Thailand slowed their pace after scoring the opening goal, while Vietnam kept up their aggressive attack.
However, Vietnam faced difficulty in seeking out chances to score goals.
Thailand was ahead by one goal at the halftime break. The scores were 1-0 in favour of the hosts, giving them a slim lead over their opponents.
Things started to look up for Vietnam once coach Philippe Troussier made bold changes in the second half.
The junior Golden Stars scored an equalizer in the 54th minute, following persistent pressing.
A free kick resulted in a sequence of passes and shots, and Le Quoc Nhat Nam deftly tapped the ball into the Thai goal.
The goal bolstered Vietnam’s morale, allowing them to create several scoring chances and command the game for the next 30 minutes.
Despite their tireless efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net a second time.

The 1-1 draw put Vietnam in second place in Group B with 10 points.
Thailand topped their group in the competition, despite only amassing 10 points. This was due to having a higher goal difference, compared to the other teams in the group.
The second-place finish set Vietnam up for a semifinal game on Saturday against Indonesia, who topped Group A.
Thailand will face Myanmar, the runners-up in Group A, on the same date. It promises to be an exciting matchup between two teams who have shown impressive form in the tournament thus far.
The 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will be hosted by Cambodia in its capital city, Phnom Penh, as well as Siem Reap Province, Preah Sihanouk Province, Kampot Province, and Kep Province. This year’s event will span from April 9 to May 17, and will bring together the best athletes from the 11 participating countries.
The Southeast Asian Games is a biennial event that is held among the 11 nations of Southeast Asia. Participants compete in a range of sports, from traditional sports such as netball and sepak takraw to more modern sports such as beach volleyball and petanque. The SEA Games also promote inter-cultural understanding and camaraderie amongst the countries of the region.
This year’s SEA Games will be the 33rd edition of the tournament and will be the first time Cambodia has hosted it. It is sure to be a grand spectacle filled with intense competition, camaraderie, and sporting excellence. With a variety of sports and activities, the 2023 SEA Games promises to be a memorable event for the participating nations.
Vietnam sent a record-breaking delegation of 1,003 members to the tournament, marking the biggest number in the country’s sporting history to be dispatched to a Southeast Asian (SEA) Games edition.
The nation topped the medal tally with 59 gold, 57 silver, and 72 bronze medals as of 12:00 pm on Friday, outstripping host Cambodia, which had 56 gold, 44 silver, and 54 bronze medals.
Thailand ranks third in medals tally with 54 gold, 39 silver, and 58 bronze medals. The country has secured a total of 151 medals across categories.
