Vietnam seized the first goal with an accurate shot by Huynh Nhu in the 19th minute of the game.
From the corner kick on the right wing by Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung, Thai Thi Thao had an excellent header that raised the scoring to 2-0 for the Vietnamese women’s team in the 24th minute.
No more goal was scored for both teams in the remaining time of the first half.
Huynh Nhu once again struck Thailand’s net in the 48th minute, but the goal was disallowed after the referee checked VAR and determined that Nhu had been offside.
Both sides continued to attack but were unable to convert any chance before the game ended.
With the 2-0 victory, Vietnam pocketed their first three points in the play-offs of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which are to determine the team that will earn the last ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals, to take place in Australia and New Zealand next year.
The 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup is hosted by India from January 20 to February 6.
The tourney also serves as the final stage of the Asian qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the top five teams advancing directly and the next two teams booking spots in the inter-confederation play-offs.
China, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines will compete in next year’s World Cup after advancing to the semifinals.
Despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals, Australia were qualified automatically for the World Cup as hosts.
This means the play-offs format is for the remaining three quarterfinal losers, namely Vietnam, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei.
The three teams are scheduled to play a single round-robin play-off, with the best team after three matches making it to the World Cup finals.
The remaining two teams will enter the inter-confederation play-offs.
Chinese Taipei will battle Thailand on February 4 before clashing with Vietnam on February 6 in the last two matches of the play-offs.
