THE HANOI TIMES — In a groundbreaking move, the Hanoi People’s Committee has greenlit a cutting-edge ticket control system for the city’s urban railway network. This innovative procedure leverages digital identification, electronic verification, and biometric recognition technologies to streamline fare collection across all metro lines.

The rollout begins with Hanoi’s pioneering metro routes: the Cat Linh – Ha Dong and Nhon – Hanoi Station lines. These inaugural routes mark the city’s first foray into modern urban rail transit.

The ticketing system is designed for versatility, offering multiple options: non-identified single tickets, biometric-enabled identified single tickets, time-based tickets with user verification, and discounted fares for senior citizens. Additionally, the system supports NFC-enabled physical and virtual cards issued by HMC, seamlessly integrating identification data for automated fare processing.

Implementation is structured into three phases. Phase one prioritizes account verification for time-based tickets (daily, weekly, monthly), utilizing Citizen ID, the VNeID app, or in-person registration at ticket counters for international travelers. Passengers with time-based tickets must undergo ticket scanning and facial recognition at fare gates, while single-ticket holders enjoy biometric-free access. The system also accommodates EMV chip cards for contactless entry.

Integration with Hanoi’s electronic ticketing framework allows senior citizens to travel using their chip-enabled Citizen ID and facial recognition, eliminating the need for paper tickets. Phase two encourages the adoption of identified single tickets via the Hanoi Metro app or kiosks, with facial recognition facilitating gate access. If biometric data is already stored in the e-ticketing system, it is automatically utilized for verification. An API platform further enhances convenience by enabling ticket purchases directly through the VNeID app.

Phase three aims to universalize identified tickets and mandate biometric verification for all station entries and exits, phasing out non-identified single tickets. Passengers without pre-registered facial data can provide biometric information at station kiosks. For single-use e-tickets, biometric registration is required prior to travel.

The city plans to extend biometric ticket control to all time-based ticket users and pilot the system for foreign passengers using passports or EMV cards and e-wallets, ensuring a seamless and inclusive transit experience.
