One thousand saplings were planted on an expansive 10-hectare plot in Xuan Son National Park, Phu Tho Province, northern Vietnam last Friday in an effort to conserve the water resources of the Hong (Red) River watershed. The planting is part of a larger initiative to protect the environment and boost the local ecosystem.

The partnership was aimed at promoting sustainable rice cultivation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from rice production in the Red River Delta region. The project included activities such as conducting research on sustainable rice cultivation methods, raising awareness among farmers about the importance of sustainable rice production, training farmers in sustainable rice cultivation techniques, and providing technical support to farmers in implementing sustainable rice production methods.
The project achieved significant success in improving the sustainability of rice production in the Red River Delta region. By the end of the project, over 8,000 farmers had been trained in sustainable rice cultivation methods, and more than 5,000 hectares of land had been converted to sustainable rice production. Furthermore, the project reduced greenhouse gas emissions from rice production in the region by an estimated 40%.
The four-year partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Heineken Vietnam, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Vietnam has been highly successful in promoting sustainable rice cultivation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from rice production in the Red River Delta region. Through research, awareness-raising, training, and technical support, the project enabled over 8,000 farmers to be trained in sustainable rice cultivation methods and over 5,000 hectares of land to be converted to sustainable rice production. As a result, greenhouse gas emissions from rice production in the region were reduced by an impressive 40%.
The watersheds of the Red, Dong Nai, and Tien Rivers are receiving VND30 billion (nearly US$1.3 million) in funding for their water conservation program, courtesy of a brewer.
The initiative helps to restore the ecosystems of the three rivers with high biodiversity and economic value. Reforestation will improve the ability to regulate and supply water to locals in the watersheds, as well as support downstream agricultural activities. This will create a positive environmental and economic impact for the local communities.
Apart from reforestation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the brewer, and WWF-Vietnam will also nurture over 400 hectares of forest to help improve the ecological functions of the natural forest system. In doing so, they aim to conserve and protect the biodiversity of the area, ensure a sustainable supply of water and protect the local communities from floods and landslides.
