received sage advice from an inspiring individual.
“A net-zero emissions target has been set by Vietnam for 2050, but Miss Universe Vietnam 2017, H’Hen Nie, emphasized that this ambitious goal can only be achieved through collective effort.” Her words, spoken at a panel discussion during the Green Vietnam Festival, resonated with the audience and emphasized the importance of unity in tackling climate change.
The festival, an initiative by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, in collaboration with Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam (PRO Vietnam) and other partners, was a two-day event held on November 9 and 10 at the Youth Culture House in District 1. It created a platform for meaningful discussions on sustainable development and environmental protection.
H’Hen Nie, a prominent voice at the festival, encouraged both businesses and citizens to embrace green lifestyles and practices. She highlighted the significance of individual actions, stating, “Only by working together can we turn sustainability into a reality.”

H’Hen Nie’s passion for the environment was evident as she elaborated on the practical changes that can be made in daily life. She advocated for energy conservation and minimizing the use of plastic bags during shopping, ensuring a better living environment for future generations.
The beauty queen also drew attention to a concerning statistic: each Vietnamese household uses approximately one kilogram of plastic bags per month. With Vietnam being among the top five countries contributing to ocean plastic waste, she emphasized the urgent need for behavioral changes.
“It is our responsibility to seek information and understand the impact of our daily choices,” she said, encouraging everyone to take ownership of their environmental footprint. “Everywhere in Vietnam is our home, and we must keep it green, clean, and beautiful.”
H’Hen Nie also addressed the issue of littering, using the example of people leaving trash behind after fireworks displays. She stressed the importance of showing commitment to the places we visit and live in, fostering a sense of collective responsibility.
The festival also witnessed the participation of influencers from the local pageant community, including Miss Intercontinental 2022, Le Nguyen Bao Ngoc. She set up a booth for her Gen Zero project, a non-profit initiative engaging youth with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on Climate Action.

Ngoc shared her journey towards environmental advocacy, stating, “Initially, I didn’t consider myself passionate about the environment, as I saw it as a complex issue for government agencies and policymakers. But a turning point came when I learned about the plastic pollution affecting the Cai Rang floating market in Can Tho City.”
This realization sparked her interest in launching projects to raise awareness and address broader environmental issues. “It’s not just about plastic pollution,” she said, “it’s about improving the lives of people and future generations.”
During a panel discussion on waste sorting, Miss Eco International 2023, Nguyen Thanh Ha, shared her observations on the challenges of effective waste separation in schools and homes. She also highlighted the excessive use of technology for food delivery apps as a contributing factor to plastic waste.

Ha’s awareness of this issue has led her to make conscious changes in her own life, reducing the plastic waste generated from food deliveries.
Miss Universe Vietnam 2022, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Chau, also shared her family’s commitment to green living. They practice waste sorting at the source, use cloth bags and baskets for shopping, and adopt efficient electricity and water usage. “Every small action for the environment matters when we all contribute,” she said.
