Founded by Pham Thi Thanh Nhung, Saigon Lotus officially opened its doors in October 2024, marking a decade since its inaugural restaurant in Ancoats, Manchester. This new cultural center embodies Nhung’s vision: to establish a Vietnam-UK cultural hub that reconnects the Vietnamese diaspora with their roots while introducing Vietnamese heritage to a global audience.

Transforming from a traditional Vietnamese restaurant into a vibrant cultural center, Saigon Lotus showcases a design that is both simple and authentically Vietnamese. Its interior features hand-painted depictions of iconic Vietnamese landmarks—Hoi An’s Ancient Town, Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Ben Thanh Market, and Hue’s Truong Tien Bridge—adorning conical hats. Complemented by Hoi An lanterns, bamboo and rattan decorations forming Vietnam’s map, a Hoi An-inspired photo corner, and intricately carved wooden furniture, the space creates a culturally immersive experience.

Together, these elements forge a meaningful cultural sanctuary that unites Manchester’s Vietnamese community while captivating British and international visitors alike.

Nhung’s inspiration stems from her years of studying and working in the UK, fueled by a deep love for her homeland and a commitment to preserving and sharing Vietnamese cultural values with younger generations abroad.

A standout event was the “Open Mic Charity Night,” a musical fundraiser supporting Vietnamese cancer patients, which attracted over 30 international attendees, including representatives from British political parties. Their presence underscored the center’s significant community impact and local recognition.

Beyond cultural preservation, Saigon Lotus celebrates Vietnamese cuisine through traditional dishes and street food featured at events like the Mid-Autumn Festival on October 4. Interactive workshops on lantern-making and competitions in crafting spring rolls and banh chung (sticky rice cake) have introduced Vietnamese traditions to international participants.

Extending its mission beyond culture, Nhung has transformed Saigon Lotus into a youth development hub. Initiatives like the co-founded “Reading With Me” program encourage early literacy, empathy, critical thinking, and language skills. The center also hosts international English-speaking contests, debates, and talent awards, inspiring youth from Vietnam, the UK, Europe, and the US to grow with kindness, gratitude, and confidence.

Saigon Lotus serves not only as a guardian of heritage but also as a nurturing ground for the next generation. The center offers scholarships and paid internships in Middleton and Manchester, focusing on customer service, barista training, Vietnamese culinary arts, life skills, and leadership development. These programs empower young people to lead healthier, happier lives while fostering creativity, adaptability, and essential competencies.

More than a restaurant, Saigon Lotus is a dynamic cultural and artistic hub—a shared space where Vietnamese traditions, hospitality, and community spirit thrive. Through authentic cuisine, traditional crafts, volunteer initiatives, and educational programs, it acts as a living bridge honoring Vietnam’s legacy, connecting generations, and touching hearts across cultures.
