The Hoan Kiem District Project Management Board has announced exciting updates on the restoration of the historic Dien Hong Park, affectionately known as the Toad Flower Garden to locals.

With a completion date set for November 2024, the project includes the meticulous restoration of the 120-year-old fountain, a beloved landmark in Hanoi. To ensure its longevity and safety for visitors, the interior bricks of the fountain will be replaced with reinforced concrete while preserving its unique design.

Local authorities have assured the community that this “treasure of the capital” will undergo a comprehensive renovation. The fountain, located in Trang Tien Ward at the intersection of Ngo Quyen, Ly Thai To, and Le Phung Hieu Streets, is a symbol of Hanoi’s rich history and cultural blend of Eastern and Western influences.

This historic site, located in the heart of Hanoi, is a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage.
The Toad Fountain, designed by architect Harlay and built by contractor Guillaume, showcases a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, making it a prominent landmark in the city.
Known locally as the “Toad Flower Garden,” the fountain features four toads spraying water, a distinctive element that has earned it its charming nickname.
Over the years, the monument has endured wear and tear, and steel straps have been necessary to preserve its structure.
The fountain suffered damage from a banyan tree growing inside the water tower, resulting in cracks.
Additionally, the water tank is in need of repair, and the sprinkler system requires attention.
Steel straps were implemented by the Hanoi Department of Construction in 2020 as a temporary solution to support the stone structures.
The ongoing renovation is a collaborative effort between the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee, the PRX Institute, and De-So Asia Design Consultant JSC, ensuring a respectful and expert approach to preserving this piece of Hanoi’s history.
The restoration process involves carefully dismantling each section of the fountain, replacing the internal brick structure with reinforced concrete, and then reassembling it to its former glory.
Transparent fences have been installed to allow the public to observe the restoration process, providing a unique opportunity to witness the transformation of this beloved landmark.
The renovation details have been shared with the public, inviting community engagement and anticipation for the reveal of the refreshed Toad Flower Garden.
By the end of 2024, this cherished location will be revitalized, once again captivating locals and visitors alike with its unique charm and beauty.
