Inside the cottage been beautifully done – decorated with taste and style while retaining the original features of the old stone cottage, with beams and timbers, wooden floors, and a wood-burning stove to keep things cozy. They’ve made it wonderfully light and airy for an old cottage, with retro furniture that complements perfectly the predominantly rustic, countryside feel. Part of an open-plan living area downstairs, the kitchen comes with a dining table for four people, and up-to-date electric oven and hob, fridge-freezer and DeLonghi coffee machine, and opens onto a good-sized garden, where’s there’s not only a fire-pit but an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven too. The living area has a sofa and easy chairs and a wood-burner (but no TV), and there’s good wifi throughout. Local art peppers the white walls, while upstairs there are two beautifully furnished, spacious bedrooms in the eaves of the house, one with a king-size bed, the other with twin beds; there’s also a family bathroom with a shower.

Richard and Carly have converted this stone barn near Ravenstonedale into three lets, two sleeping four and one sleeping six, which can be booked individually or together. The Haystore and the Byre are perhaps the coziest, with an upside-down layout: two en suite bedrooms on the ground floor, both with whirlpool baths; a double-height, open-plan living/dining area on the first floor and a balcony with steps down to a courtyard. 6. The Hemmel, Oxfordshire

The Hemmel is a stunning cottage located on the outskirts of Faringdon in West Oxfordshire. It has 2 bedrooms; the master suite has a double bed and in-room roll-top bath and hand basin, with a separate, private w.c. The 2nd bedroom is a twin room. There is a separate family shower room with a walk-in shower, WC, and hand basin. It has an open-plan lounge, kitchen, and dining area to comfortably accommodate 4 guests. To the front of the cottage is a paved seating area where you will also find the original well – now ‘capped’ for safety. There is off-road parking for 2 cars.
